Access to Credit
After experiencing a landslide that destroyed the water main connecting a spring to their homes, the residents of Cedar Mountain, Tennessee faced many tough decisions. Once the decision was made to use a neighboring utility as their water source, funding to construct water lines and a pumping station (to get the water up their mountain) remained a hurdle. Finding the best source of funding, completing the application process, and meeting the qualifications required to use the obtained funds, can prove challenging for anyone.
In the case of Cedar Mountain Guy Sepich, a member of Community Resource Group’s (CRG’s) water and wastewater services staff, worked with this community to meet these challenges. Providing them with his expertise and many years of experience in dealing with the United States Department of Agriculture-Rural Development (USDA-RD) office, Guy helped this Co-op obtain the necessary funds.
Community Resource Group also directly extends loans to qualifying small, rural water systems. These loans originate from CRG’s lending program. Since the start of this program in 1991, hundreds of small, rural communities have accessed funds for pre-development costs, emergency repairs, and equipment needs—all necessary to secure a safe drinking water supply, or safe wastewater disposal, and all prerequisites for a healthy community.
At CRG, lending is a means, not an end. We work hard to develop loan products, and structure deals, that make a difference. Since success takes more than just money, CRG partners with communities to provide onsite technical assistance and education, along with financing, to help borrowers succeed. The residents of Cedar Mountain plan to celebrate in January of 2008—that’s when the water lines and pumping station are scheduled for completion, insuring them safe, and reliable, water.
For questions about financing, please contact a CRG water and wastewater services staff member in your state, or email info@crg.org.
